Pair a charger with the right inverter setup and you can have your car draw on your own solar generation before it touches the grid. If solar or a battery’s already fitted at your property, we check the existing setup for compatibility before recommending which charger to fit.
There’s still a grant on the table for some households: the EV Chargepoint Grant covers 75% of a home charger’s cost up to £500, though it’s been narrowed to renters, flat owner-occupiers, leaseholders and landlords installing for tenants since 2022 (the £500 cap itself is an April 2026 increase from £350), so homeowners in a standard house no longer qualify. We’ll check what, if anything, you’re eligible for as part of the quote.
Tethered cable, or your own?
A tethered unit has the cable built in, so you pull up and plug straight in. Go untethered instead and you get a universal socket, using whichever cable came with your car. Neither charges any faster than the other.
Nearly every home charger fitted in the UK runs at 7kW, adding roughly 25–30 miles of range per hour on charge. A 60kWh battery charging from empty takes around 8–10 hours at that rate, which is why most owners charge overnight.

Can my car really charge straight from my panels?
With the right charger and inverter pairing, yes. Many smart chargers can be set to only draw from whatever solar you’ve got spare, topping up automatically the moment your panels produce more than the house needs.
Does my consumer unit need upgrading?
Your charger runs on its own dedicated circuit back to the consumer unit, and fitting that is part of the standard job. If your existing unit doesn’t have spare capacity, we’ll flag it, along with what that extra work involves, before you commit to anything.
I don’t have a driveway, can I still get one fitted?
You need a way to route the cable from the house to the car without it crossing a public footpath. We’ll confirm exactly what your specific property allows during the survey.
