This is Dorset’s largest built-up area, where Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch run together into one conurbation. Dorchester, Weymouth & Bridport.
Dorchester is Dorset’s county town, and Weymouth and Portland bring in a mix of Georgian seafront terraces and more recent harbour-side development. Further west, Bridport, West Bay, Lyme Regis and Charmouth sit on the most famous stretch of the Jurassic Coast, the beaches where Mary Anning found some of the first complete ichthyosaur fossils in the early 1800s, and where fossil hunting still draws visitors today. Sherborne and Beaminster, inland, bring in more traditional Dorset stone and thatch.

Blandford Forum & Shaftesbury.
This is the most rural part of the county we cover, taking in Blandford Forum’s Georgian town centre, hilltop Shaftesbury, and smaller villages like Cerne Abbas, best known for the chalk hill figure cut into the down above it, and Milton Abbas, a planned 18th-century village of thatched cottages. Listed buildings and conservation area status come up more often out here than in the towns further south.

The Isle of Purbeck sits within the Jurassic Coast, England’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, and takes in Swanage’s seafront, the market town of Wareham, and villages like Corfe Castle and Lulworth that sit inside the Dorset National Landscape. Stone-built, listed and conservation-area properties are common here, so a proper planning check is part of every survey.
